Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to suggest some changes in our reception area.
It is very unfortunate to say, but many people visiting our company complain about our reception. I often heard many people saying that there are limited number of seats to sit. As a result, people stand while waiting for their turn. Additionally, the water cooler in the reception are does not work properly and this makes people frustrate.
I believe reception is the first intercation people have with our compnay so it should be appealing rather than disappointing. Therefore, installing some more seats and also, replacing the old water cooler with new one would be a great idea to improve our main attraction area. What is more, placing some fake plants would make the area more appealing.
I hope you would consider my ideas while making improvements in the reception area.
Yours faithfully,
Navneet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You clearly describe the complaints regarding the limited seating and the broken water cooler, explain why the reception area is important as the first point of contact for visitors, and suggest practical improvements such as adding more seats, replacing the water cooler, and placing fake plants. Your ideas are relevant and supported, providing a clear position throughout the letter, although some points like the decoration could be extended slightly further to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the opening statement to the description of complaints, the importance of the reception, and finally the suggested improvements. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Additionally' and 'What is more', to connect your ideas, although occasionally the referencing and transitions between sentences feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately for a formal letter format.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'appealing rather than disappointing' and 'main attraction area'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'intercation' instead of interaction, 'compnay' instead of company, and 'makes people frustrate' instead of frustrated or frustrating. These lexical errors and awkward word choices prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher standard, though communication is not severely impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing shows a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating reasonable control over your grammar. For instance, sentences like 'I believe reception is the first intercation people have with our compnay so it should be appealing' show an attempt at complex structures. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('the reception are', 'with new one') and minor prepositional slips. These errors persist throughout the text, placing your grammatical accuracy at a solid intermediate level.
