Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Manager,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my suggestions to improve the reception area. In recent month, we have received several complains from visitors that we do not have enough sitting arrangement. Some visitors have also raised the concern over privacy as waiting area and reception area are very close so anyone in waiting room can hear the outside conversation.
Reception area build the reputation of our company. Individuals who have visited us for the first time may judge the service from the time they enter in the facilities. Therefore, these concern should be taken seriously.
I believe enclosing reception area would be a good solution. This way conversations between staff and customer can make it confidential. We also need to employ contractor to renovate waiting area to find the way of expansion. This way customers will be satisfy with our service.
I would also like you to consult reception staff. They may address these issues in better ways. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you
Kind regards,
Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by describing visitor complaints, explaining the importance of the reception area, and suggesting practical improvements. Your position is clear throughout the letter. The ideas are generally well extended and supported, such as when you explain how first-time visitors judge the company's service based on the entrance. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalize or leave certain points slightly under-developed, such as the exact nature of the expansion plans. To reach the next level, you could fully develop every single idea with deeper explanation or more specific examples without losing focus.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organization and progression throughout the letter. The text is divided into appropriate paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose from the opening greeting to the concluding sign-off. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well to connect your thoughts, such as using 'Therefore' and 'This way' to link problems to consequences and solutions. Referencing is generally clear, though a slightly more flexible range of cohesive phrases and more sophisticated transition markers would elevate the flow further. Overall, the arrangement of ideas is coherent and guides the reader smoothly from start to finish.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and workplace terminology such as 'confidential', 'reputation', and 'contractor'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, form, and collocation. For instance, writing 'In recent month' instead of 'months', 'sitting arrangement' instead of 'seating arrangements', and 'enter in the facilities' instead of 'enter the facilities'. Furthermore, phrases like 'employ contractor' miss necessary articles. These occasional lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher score which requires greater precision and control over less common vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, as seen in conditional or reason-based structures like 'Individuals who have visited us for the first time may judge...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly involving article omission and singular/plural consistency, such as 'Reception area build' instead of 'The reception area builds' and 'these concern' instead of 'these concerns'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and your control over sentence boundaries is generally clear. To achieve a higher band, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences.
