Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Genreal Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to kindly share some complaints about our company's reception area where visitors arrive. Firstly, the area is in the corner part in of the entrance to our company so visitors find difficult to navigate and ask for assistence. Secondly, the area should have some more written information for the visitors like, banners, posters and company map for directory. This was the most common compliant I got was that the receptionist were most of the time not present on the rush hours.

The reception is the most important part of our company because this is the first thing ot the area form where we get our clients or vistors. Also, this is benificial for visitors that they can get basic information about our comapany get a directory that where they want to seek for help.

I would like to give some suggestions to improve our reception- that we can assign a reciptionist full time who can assit and maintian clients data. Additionaly, we should move our reception to the centre of our comapny entrance for vistors to find it easily.

I hope you will thake this problems and suggestions into consideration. I would be greatful for further help to make this changes.

Kind regards,

Raj Daga

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score in this area. You have described the complaints regarding navigation, lack of written information, and the receptionist being absent during rush hours. Furthermore, you explained why the reception area is important, noting that it acts as the primary point of contact for clients and visitors, and provided clear suggestions for improvement, such as assigning a full-time receptionist and relocating the desk. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended, which is characteristic of the level achieved. For instance, while you mention the need for banners and posters, you could have expanded slightly on what kind of information they should contain to make your solution more robust. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and all bullet points from the instructions are addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical flow of ideas, reflecting the score awarded. You have organised your writing into appropriate paragraphs, separating the introduction, complaints, importance, suggestions, and conclusion clearly. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Also' are used to connect your thoughts, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on sequence markers. Additionally, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as when pronouns like 'this' or 'it' refer back rather broadly to clauses rather than specific, clear noun phrases. To reach the next level, you need to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing is consistently transparent throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, providing a minimally sufficient range to convey your message, which places your lexical resource at this level. You make valid attempts at less common workplace vocabulary, such as 'navigate', 'assistence', 'comapany', and 'recipetionist'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('Genreal', 'assistence', 'comapany', 'compliant', 'benificial', 'reciptionist', 'maintian', 'Additionaly', 'greatful', 'thake') and occasional word-choice inaccuracies, such as using 'seek for help' instead of simply 'seek help'. These errors occasionally cause slight distraction for the reader. To improve, you need to expand your vocabulary range, pay closer attention to spelling accuracy, and ensure that your word forms and collocations match standard business English usage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a limited range of sentence structures, relying on a mix of simple and moderately complex sentences, which is typical for this band. While you attempt complex structures such as relative clauses in '...where visitors to our company arrive' and '...who can assit and maintian clients data', your attempts are frequently marred by errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions. For example, you write 'in the corner part in of the entrance' (unnecessary preposition and article misuse), 'find difficult to navigate' (missing reflexive pronoun or object), 'ot the area form where' (typographical and preposition errors), and 'to make this changes' (plural/singular agreement error). Frequent errors of this nature require the reader to occasionally expend effort to decipher the meaning. To achieve a higher score, you must broaden your grammatical repertoire while improving accuracy in basic agreement and prepositional patterns.
