Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Novaira,
I hope you are doing well. I'm writing today in response to your last letter in which you asked for suggestions to improve our company's reception area.
Recently, there have been several compaints from visitors about the reception area. These complaints includes a lack or air conditioning and cold drinking water. There has also been one complaint about the receptionist not being present when needed.
I want to stress on the importance of reception area. As they say first impression is the last impression, reception area is the first place people see when they visit our company. So it should be tidy, well-organized and must contain all necessary facilities.
I want to suggest that it need installation of a new air conditioner. It also needs a new water dispenser with fresh water on daily basis. Also, please talk to the receptionist to stay present when someone is in need. I would also suggest you to hire another cleaner for it.
I hope these changes will be applied soon.
Kind regards,
Wick

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you report complaints about air conditioning, drinking water and the receptionist’s availability, explain that reception creates visitors’ first impression, and propose practical changes. The suggestions are relevant and generally specific, especially installing an air conditioner and providing a water dispenser. Your purpose is clear throughout, and the letter is appropriately directed to your manager. To develop the ideas more fully, explain the impact of the complaints or how the proposed changes would improve visitors’ experience. The suggestion to hire another cleaner is not clearly linked to a complaint or to a stated problem, so briefly explain why extra cleaning is needed. Overall, the task is covered effectively, though some points could be supported in greater detail.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: an opening purpose, a paragraph describing complaints, an explanation of reception’s importance, and a final paragraph of recommendations. This organisation makes the message easy to follow, and phrases such as “Recently” and “Also” help connect the points. The closing is appropriate for a letter to a manager. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, particularly the repeated use of “I want to” and “Also.” The relationship between the suggestion to hire another cleaner and the earlier complaints is also not made explicit. Use a wider range of transitions and make the connection between each problem and its solution clearer to create smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use adequate vocabulary to communicate the situation and recommendations, including “complaints,” “first impression,” “well-organized,” and “water dispenser.” These choices suit the topic, and the meaning remains clear. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “stress on the importance,” “on daily basis,” and “stay present when someone is in need.” There are also spelling and word-choice slips, including “compaints” and “lack or air conditioning,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and a slightly more formal register for a letter to a manager. For example, describe the facilities as “reliable” or “adequate,” and state that the receptionist should be available to assist visitors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including the opening sentence with “in which you asked” and the explanation beginning “As they say.” Most ideas are understandable, and errors rarely prevent communication. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, however. For example, “These complaints includes” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “I want to suggest that it need installation” has an incorrect verb form and sentence construction. Articles are also missing in “importance of reception area” and “reception area is the first place.” Practise checking agreement, articles and verb patterns, and revise sentences such as “I suggest installing a new air conditioner” to make them more accurate and natural.
