Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Manager,

Hope you are well. I am writing to inform about your reception area of your hotel how can we imporve as there are many compalints regarding to it.

There are many complaints about your hotel, I saw on a website which ultimately negative impacts of your business growth. As we all know, your hotwl '' The Golden Villa" is one of the famous place in our city. However, the people usually complaints about customer service which really bad and style of area looks unfurnished.

Reception area is very important for the growth because it helps to attract the customers and increase popularity. Moreover, best customer service is essential, a receptionist knows how to talk with customer so they can feel comfortable. Apart from this, furnished area like proper desk, digital devices always gives a unique vibe and looks smarter.

As I mentioned earlier, I believe that you need to hire more staff which help in your hotel progress and work on the service which you provide to others.

I hope you will inderstand my concern and acts accordingly.

Yours sincerly

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address all three points: you report complaints about customer service and the appearance of the area, explain that reception can attract customers and make them feel comfortable, and recommend hiring more staff and improving service. However, the complaints are introduced vaguely (“I saw on a website”) and the proposed changes are not specific enough to show how the unfurnished reception would be improved. The letter also shifts between addressing “your hotel” and speaking as a company employee, which makes your purpose and relationship to the manager less clear. Develop each point with a concrete detail—for example, what visitors say about staff or which furnishings and facilities should be added—and maintain a consistent, professional tone.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure, with separate paragraphs for the complaints, the importance of reception, and your recommendation. Linking phrases such as “Moreover” and “Apart from this” help connect related points, and the closing is appropriate in purpose. Some progression is less clear because the opening combines the purpose with an awkward question, while the final recommendation is brief and does not clearly connect the appearance complaint to a practical solution. References such as “your hotel” also make the reader’s role less consistent. Use a direct opening, then organise the body around the three requested points, with each recommendation clearly following from a complaint.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “customer service,” “attract the customers,” “receptionist,” and “digital devices.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the message less natural: “negative impacts of your business growth,” “style of area looks unfurnished,” and “work on the service” are examples. Spelling errors such as “imporve,” “compalints,” “hotwl,” and “sincerly” are also noticeable. Aim for precise, conventional phrases and check spelling carefully. For instance, describe the area as “poorly furnished” and say that complaints “could harm the hotel’s reputation.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including “Moreover, best customer service is essential, a receptionist knows how to talk with customer so they can feel comfortable.” However, sentence boundaries and grammatical patterns are often inaccurate, and these errors can make the reader work to understand your meaning. The opening, “I am writing to inform about your reception area … how can we improve,” is not formed as a clear statement. There are also errors with articles, plurals, agreement, and prepositions, as in “one of the famous place” and “a receptionist knows how to talk with customer.” Use complete sentences with clear punctuation, and check subject–verb agreement and singular/plural forms.
