Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Mr. Lee,

I am writing to bring your attention to the ABC hotel's reception area. We have been recieving several complains about it for the last 3 months. I would like to give some suggetions to improve overall visitors' experience of the reception area.

During last long weekend, a visitor group from the USA came to visit our establishment. Although they were satisfied with the food service, cleaniness and overall stay, they complained about the reception because it did not posess enoght seating. Moreover they said that there was no one at the reception at about 12 o'clock. This had caused considarable inconvenience.

This area is most visited by the customers.Plus, recepetion is the first impression of the hotel. It has several benefits, if we update it will all necessary amenities.

To improve the area, I would suggest you to provide sufficient seating,so that visitor can seat and enjoy the stay. Moreover, It would be beneficial to provide welcome drink to all visitors. It would bring attention

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you report complaints about insufficient seating and the reception being unattended around noon, explain that reception creates the hotel’s first impression, and suggest seating and welcome drinks. These details make the letter relevant and give the manager a clear starting point. However, the importance of the area is only briefly explained, and the benefit of updating it with amenities is unclear. The improvement suggestions also need fuller development: for example, explain how staff coverage could be arranged so visitors are not left waiting, and why a welcome drink would improve their experience. The final sentence, “It would bring attention,” is incomplete, so the purpose of that suggestion is not fully conveyed. Develop each point more clearly and finish with an appropriate closing request or sign-off.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a generally clear sequence: you introduce the issue, describe a specific visit and its complaints, explain the importance of reception, and then offer improvements. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “To improve the area” guide the reader. This gives the response a coherent overall arrangement. Some connections are less smooth, however. “This area is most visited by the customers” does not clearly follow from the previous paragraph, and “It has several benefits, if we update it…” leaves the relationship between the ideas uncertain. The final paragraph also stops abruptly. To strengthen progression, connect the importance of reception directly to the complaints and explain how each proposed change addresses them; use punctuation consistently around linking phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “reception area,” “inconvenience,” “sufficient seating,” and “first impression.” These choices help communicate the main concerns and recommendations. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “recieving,” “complains,” “cleaniness,” “posess,” and “enoght,” which reduce the accuracy and polish of the letter. Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “visitor group” and “enjoy the stay” do not express the intended meaning naturally, while “bring attention” is incomplete and unclear. Aim for accurate, conventional collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise language such as “a group of visitors,” “remain at reception,” and “enhance the guest experience” would make the recommendations clearer and more professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including the concession “Although they were satisfied…, they complained…” and the conditional purpose clause “so that visitor can…”. The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I would suggest you to provide” should be “I would suggest providing” or “I would suggest that you provide”; “visitor can seat” needs a plural subject and the verb “sit”; and “This had caused” is an awkward tense choice for describing the inconvenience, where “This caused” is more suitable. There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary issues, such as the missing space after “customers.” and the comma splice in “It has several benefits, if we update it…”. Practise accurate verb patterns, agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
