Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to let you know that how the complaints of reception area can be improved which are being made by new visitors.

There are severals complaints are being made. Firslty, people have to wait longer because old computers work very slow, and take a bit time to confirm bookings. In addition, foreigner visitors have to face language problems because receptionsit only knows his native language. In the end, people take long breaks, so new visitors have to see that reception has been closed.

First impression is the last impression of every business, so if people are not treated well at entrance, they will never come back and refer to their friends to visit that shop and area again. That can lead to reducing the productivity of every business. This is why reception area is crucial.

I would suggest that computers should be replaced with new technology so that work could be done faster than before. Furthermore, employer must install CCTV cameras which will help to find out the employees who take their lunch breaks longer.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Sandeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you identify slow computers, language difficulties and long staff breaks; explain that reception shapes visitors’ first impressions; and recommend updated computers and CCTV. The letter is relevant and your purpose is clear. However, some points are less fully developed than others. For example, the language complaint is mentioned but no remedy is suggested, and the CCTV proposal focuses on monitoring breaks without explaining how visitor service would improve. The claim that visitors “will never come back” is also rather absolute. To strengthen the response, connect each complaint to a practical solution, such as multilingual support or clearer cover arrangements during breaks, and explain the expected benefit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph describing complaints, an explanation of reception’s importance, and a paragraph of recommendations. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “In addition,” and “Furthermore” help guide the reader, and the closing is appropriate. This organisation is effective, though some linking is mechanical and a few references are not fully clear. For instance, “That can lead to reducing the productivity of every business” follows a point about visitors not returning, but the connection could be expressed more directly. The opening sentence is also difficult to follow, which weakens the transition into the purpose. Use clearer topic sentences and link each proposed improvement explicitly to the complaint it addresses.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main issues, including “first impression,” “language problems,” “replaced with new technology,” and “crucial.” There is some variety in how you describe the complaints and recommendations. However, several word-choice, collocation, word-form and spelling problems make the writing less natural, such as “severals complaints,” “receptionsit,” “take a bit time,” and “long breaks.” “Shop and area” is also imprecise for a company reception, while “reducing the productivity” is an awkward expression. Aim for accurate, natural phrases such as “several complaints,” “receptionist,” “take some time,” and “extended breaks.” More precise vocabulary for visitor services would help you express the proposals clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including explanations with “because” and a conditional result in “if people are not treated well … they will never come back.” Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. The opening, “I am writing to let you know that how the complaints … can be improved,” has an incorrect clause structure; write, for example, “I am writing to suggest how the reception area could be improved in response to visitors’ complaints.” In “There are severals complaints are being made,” the sentence combines incompatible structures. There are also agreement and article issues in “employer must install” and “reception area is crucial.” Practise accurate clause construction and check articles, plurals and subject–verb agreement.
