Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I, Taksh Prjapati working in SGS Burnbay location, writing this letter to inform you that in the last few days i have received number of complaints regarding the reception area. Many visitors claim that the area has some fouling smell as well as a few of them do not like the interior of the area as the floor is pretty dirty and the color of the wall is damaged in some areas.
Moreover, the reception area is the crucial part of the company as it helps to creates the first positive image of the company in the visitors mind. Additionally, it uplifts the mood of the people who prefer to sit in the reception area and wish to complete some of their important tasks.
Furthermore, currently the reception area is not in the good condition; however, this condition can be easily improved. Firstly, the interior color should be changed. It will help to uplift the mood of the visitors. Secondly, the floor mats can be completely removed and can be replace with the carpets having decent drawings.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will take this issue seriously and will take suitable action to overcome it.
Yours Sincerely
Taksh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points clearly: you report complaints about the smell, dirty floor and damaged wall colour; explain that reception shapes visitors’ first impression; and propose changing the wall colour and replacing the floor mats. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the suggestions are relevant. The explanation of reception’s importance is extended by mentioning visitors’ mood and ability to complete tasks, although this second point is less clearly connected to the company’s needs. The proposed improvements could also be more fully supported—for example, explain how cleaning or ventilation would address the smell and how the new flooring would be maintained. Overall, the response covers the task with clear, relevant ideas, but some development remains general.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the complaints, explains why reception matters, then offers improvements and closes politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Additionally,” and “Firstly” guide the reader through the points. The sequence is easy to follow, though the repeated use of formal transitions makes some connections feel slightly mechanical. The final paragraph could link each proposed action more directly to a specific complaint, so the reader can see how the suggestions solve the problems described earlier. Overall, the organisation is logical and the ideas progress clearly, with some scope for more natural and precise cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “fouling smell,” “interior,” “crucial part,” and “first positive image.” These choices communicate the main points, but several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “fouling smell” would be more naturally expressed as “unpleasant odour,” and “color of the wall is damaged” could be “the paint is peeling” or “the walls are marked.” “Decent drawings” is also an imprecise description of the proposed carpet design. There is some repetition of “area” and “visitors,” and spelling and word-form control is uneven. More natural collocations and specific vocabulary would make the letter sound more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes both simple and more complex sentence forms, such as the sentence beginning “Many visitors claim that…” and the contrast introduced by “however.” Meaning remains clear despite some grammatical errors. For example, “I … working … writing” needs a finite verb (“I am writing”), “helps to creates” should be “helps to create,” and “can be replace” should be “can be replaced.” There are also issues with articles and possessives in “in the visitors mind,” and capitalisation is inconsistent in “i.” These errors show that control is not yet consistent, although they rarely prevent understanding. Check verb forms and agreement carefully, and proofread articles, possessives and sentence punctuation.
