Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr.Dinh,
I am writing in response to suggest some possible solutions to improve reception area.
There have been two major complaints about the reception area.First problem that caused inconvenience to customers is of shortage of staff ,due to which people have to wait for a long in queue.Second problem is lack of information board which customers faced difficulty in finding their locations.
When people entre to inside the premises ,the first thing they move forwarded is towards reception area which needs to be properly structured. This area is of information desk where everyone hopes to get information when needed.
I would kindly like to suggest to implement proper signage inside the company.Secondly, assigimimg more staff during business hours would also be great to assist more and to avoid long waiting time.
I hope my suggestions works for you and implnentation of theses alternatuives would be helpful .
Yours sincerely,
Sukhdeep kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three requested points: you identify long queues caused by staff shortages and difficulty finding locations because there is no information board, explain that reception is the first point visitors approach and an information desk, and recommend signage and additional staff. These details make the letter relevant and its purpose clear. The explanation of reception’s importance is less fully developed than the complaints and solutions, however; for example, you could explain how a welcoming, well-organised reception shapes visitors’ first impression of the company. The suggestions are appropriate but would be stronger with a little more detail, such as where signs should be placed or when extra staff are most needed. This covers the task well overall, with some ideas not yet fully extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall sequence: purpose, complaints, importance, recommendations, and closing. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and phrases such as “First problem” and “Secondly” guide the reader through the points. This logical arrangement makes the message easy to follow. Some linking is mechanical, though, and punctuation spacing makes a few transitions less smooth—for instance, “reception area.First problem” runs together. The relationship between the two complaints could also be expressed more naturally, and the final paragraph moves quickly from suggestions to the closing. Use a wider range of simple links and ensure each paragraph is clearly separated and punctuated to make the progression more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “shortage of staff,” “information board,” “signage,” and “long waiting time,” so the main message is understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “I am writing in response” and “I would kindly like to suggest.” However, several inaccurate word choices, spelling errors, and awkward collocations reduce precision: “move forwarded” does not express approaching reception, while “assigimimg,” “implnentation,” and “alternatuives” are difficult to interpret. “Wait for a long in queue” is also not a natural phrase. Focus on accurate, conventional combinations and proofread spelling; this will make your otherwise relevant vocabulary more effective and easier to read.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the clause “due to which people have to wait…” and the explanation beginning “When people entre…”. The overall meaning can generally be followed, but some grammatical errors affect clarity and naturalness. For example, “improve reception area” needs an article, and “First problem that caused inconvenience…” lacks a clear article and complete structure. In “I hope my suggestions works,” the plural subject requires a plural verb; “people have to wait for a long in queue” also has an incomplete grammatical pattern. Punctuation is inconsistent, with missing spaces after full stops and commas. Build accuracy in articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
