Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to complain about a reception area where visitors arrive.Firstly, it is not furnished properly. There are many people who ar facing problems while sitting. Secondly, some customers have to wait for a long time because there are not enough staff members to assist them. Some visitors also complaint about lack of clear signs.

The reception area is very important because it is the first place where visitors see after they enter into company. It creates a positiv impression.

I would appreciate it if you could omprove the reception area by providing some chairs and sofa for sitting. I would request you to hire some professional people which help customer to solve any problem. Finally, you could also put some clear signs that help people to find different departments. I hope you will consider my suggestions. I look forward to hearing from you.Thank you for your consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points: you describe inadequate seating, long waits due to insufficient staff, and unclear signs; explain that reception creates visitors’ first impression; and offer relevant improvements. The purpose is clear, and the suggestions respond directly to the complaints. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. For example, you mention that visitors face problems while sitting but do not explain what is uncomfortable or insufficient, and the importance of reception is stated briefly rather than supported with further detail. The opening also says you are writing “to complain,” although the task is to suggest improvements on the manager’s request. A more precise purpose statement and a little explanation of the impact of each issue would make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: complaints are presented first, followed by the importance of reception and then proposed solutions. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Finally” help the reader follow the points, and the closing is appropriate. The suggestions also correspond logically to the problems raised. To make the organisation more polished, separate the complaints, explanation, and recommendations into distinct paragraphs, and use a wider range of linking expressions rather than relying mainly on numbered transitions. There are a few places where sentence boundaries are unclear, such as “arrive.Firstly” and “from you.Thank you,” which interrupt the flow. Overall, though, the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main issues and recommendations, including “assist,” “clear signs,” “professional,” and “consider my suggestions.” The wording is generally understandable, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “some customers have to wait” could be expressed more precisely as “visitors experience long waiting times,” while “hire some professional people” is vague for this context. There are also spelling errors in “ar,” “positiv,” and “omprove,” and “complaint” is used where the plural noun “complaints” is needed. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit the accuracy and naturalness of the vocabulary. Aim for precise workplace-related collocations and proofread spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple sentences and more complex forms, including “because there are not enough staff members to assist them” and the polite conditional “I would appreciate it if you could…”. Most ideas remain clear, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the first place where visitors see” needs a clearer construction such as “the first place visitors see,” and “people which help customer” has problems with the relative pronoun and singular/plural agreement. The phrase “after they enter into company” also needs an article and a more natural preposition pattern. Punctuation and spacing need attention, particularly where sentences run together. More accurate control of articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries would strengthen the response.
