Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Gagan kailey
I am writing this letter with regards to a planthora of complaints about the reception area.
The most frequent issue, I have admitted about the waiting time. Visitors complained that they have to spend a plenty of time while waiting for their enquieries as they find one or two persons at the front desk. Furthermore, the next is of congested area. There is even quite less room for people to manage. Moreover, some claimed that reception is looked old fashioned and not appropriate with the modern business structures.
With respect to the importance of reception area, this arena is the facad of the any organisation. It put the first impression on the people visiting the corporation. Consequently, this area demands more attention.
From my viewpoint, We should utilise the space effectively with modern business techniques. As a result, this will allow enough space in the area.In addition to it,we can recruit more staff members for answering the questions of visitors. Lastly, we can renovate the area with new furniture and by adding more facilities likewise portable charging spots, chairs , business magazines and such.
Yours sincerely,
Jasveer Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements clearly. It identifies complaints about long waits, limited space and an outdated appearance, explains that reception creates the first impression of the company, and proposes more staff, better use of space and a refurbishment with added facilities. These points are relevant and the purpose remains clear throughout. The suggestions are also linked to the problems, particularly recruiting staff to answer visitors’ questions. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain how the changes would work—for example, how the layout could reduce congestion or what additional facilities would be most useful. The opening and closing are appropriate for a letter to a manager, though the recipient’s name should be presented accurately and consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, logical sequence: the opening states the purpose, the next paragraph describes complaints, and later paragraphs explain the importance of reception and offer solutions. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these functions, and signposts such as “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “Lastly” make the progression easy to follow. Some linking is a little mechanical, however, and the list of complaints and recommendations could be connected more explicitly to show which solution addresses each issue. There are also spacing and punctuation inconsistencies around transitions, such as “area, this” and “area. In addition.” More controlled linking and careful presentation would make the organisation feel smoother and less dependent on formulaic connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses a range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “congested,” “first impression,” “renovate,” and “facilities.” These choices help communicate the complaints and proposed improvements. However, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions reduce precision: “planthora of complaints,” “I have admitted about the waiting time,” “enquieries,” and “the facad of the any organisation.” Some phrases, such as “modern business structures” and “portable charging spots,” are also not the most natural choices in this context. Check spelling and collocations, and prefer straightforward, accurate wording over ambitious expressions that do not fit. Greater control of common business vocabulary would make the letter clearer and more professional.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
There is some variety in sentence structure, including complex sentences with “as,” “while,” and “Consequently,” and the reader can generally follow the intended meaning. However, errors in articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to affect accuracy. For example, “It put the first impression” needs a correctly formed verb and article, while “the facad of the any organisation” has an incorrect article pattern. “Visitors complained that they have to spend” also shifts tense awkwardly, and “we can recruit” follows a sentence beginning “From my viewpoint, We” with inconsistent capitalisation. Review article use, subject–verb agreement, tense consistency and punctuation, especially in longer sentences. These corrections would make the message more fluent and reliable.
