Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Russ,
I am writing to request that you make a suggestion for how the reception area could be improved.
The main problem and, complaints about the reception is that staff is very unprofessional, they don't even greet to the guests arrive to the recepetion area. Moreover, I noticed there are some colleagues who uses cell phones during their shift on reception area which showcase a very bad image of our company and unprofessional behavior. Reception area is very important to us because entrance of the company showcases the main image of the company.
The most Significant solution to improve reception area is to provide some basic trainings to employees, take action against those who are not following company policies related to reception area, we can install some tv screens on recpetion area which display our company logo, mission and values it will definitely attract the visitors and showcases positive impact on them.
I would appreciate it if you could take these necessary measures to improve reception area.
Thank You.
John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three points: you describe reception staff failing to greet visitors and using phones, explain that the area creates the company’s first impression, and suggest training, enforcement of policies, and screens displaying company information. The purpose of the letter is clear and the suggestions are relevant. However, some ideas are less fully developed than others. For example, you mention taking action against staff but do not explain what action would be appropriate, and the benefit of the screens is asserted rather than clearly linked to visitors’ needs. The opening, “request that you make a suggestion,” also does not accurately express your purpose: you are making suggestions yourself. State this directly and add a little explanation or detail to each proposal.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: it opens with its purpose, describes the complaints and importance of reception, then presents improvements and closes politely. Linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “because” help show relationships between ideas, and the paragraphs broadly group related information. Some connections are less smooth, however. The complaints, importance, and proposed solutions are crowded into long blocks, while the list of solutions runs together in one sentence. The phrase “The main problem and, complaints” also interrupts the flow. Use clearer paragraph breaks and separate each proposal into a sentence, with a brief link explaining how it addresses the complaint. This would make the progression more natural and less dependent on explicit connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to a workplace letter, including “unprofessional,” “company policies,” “mission and values,” and “visitors,” so the main message is understandable. There is some attempt to use more formal language, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. For instance, “make a suggestion” does not fit your role here, “showcase a very bad image” is unnatural, and “basic trainings” is not the usual form. Spelling errors such as “recepetion” and “recpetion” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural combinations and precise verbs, and check spelling carefully. A more controlled range would help you express the complaints and the intended benefits more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a relative clause in “colleagues who uses cell phones.” The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur in agreement, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “staff is” and “colleagues who uses” have subject–verb agreement problems; “greet to the guests arrive” is not a complete, correctly formed construction; and “entrance of the company” needs an article or possessive form. The long sentence beginning “The most Significant solution” also joins several proposals without clear grammatical boundaries. Use shorter sentences where needed, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
