Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr. Khanna,

I hope you are doing great. My name is Pooja Mehra. I was sitting right next to you during my travel from Toronto to India on 27 October 2026 Monday morning. Luckily, we both had same destination. It was really great to travel with you on that day, I learned a lot from your stories and experiences.

I am writing this letter to inquire about the Hotel Manager job openning at one of you restaraunt located in New Delhi, which you mentioned during our conversation.

I believe I will be a suitable candidate to fill this vacancy. I have recently completed my 2- Year diploma in Advanced Hotel Management and Hospitality from Lambton Collage Toronto in March 2025. Apart from this, while studying I also worked part-time in Kings Hotel Toronto as a Senior Manager. I have great knowledge of this field.

Therefore, I hope my experties in management and hospitality will be a great asset for your hotel. Thank you for offering me this wonderful opportunity. I am Looking forward to hear back from you.

Best regards,

Pooja Mehra

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three points clearly: you remind Mr Khanna that you met on the Toronto-to-India flight on 27 October, identify your interest in a Hotel Manager position, and support your suitability with relevant study and work experience. The details about your diploma and part-time management role make the application credible and purposeful. The main opportunity for stronger development is to explain more specifically what you did as a Senior Manager or which skills you gained, rather than concluding generally that you have “great knowledge of this field.” Also, the opening says you shared a destination, but the meeting context could be stated more precisely. Overall, the purpose and tone remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information follows a clear, useful sequence: you establish the previous meeting, make your request, present your qualifications, and close politely. Paragraphing supports this progression, and phrases such as “Apart from this” and “Therefore” help connect the ideas. The letter is easy to follow, although some links feel slightly mechanical or do not express the relationship precisely; for example, “Therefore” introduces a conclusion that could be connected more directly to the qualifications just listed. The opening also includes several details in one paragraph, while the job request and evidence are separated effectively. To make the organisation more polished, use transitions that show the exact relationship between ideas and keep each paragraph focused on one purpose.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal job enquiry, including “inquire,” “suitable candidate,” “vacancy,” and “asset.” These choices communicate your purpose and qualifications, and the tone is generally appropriate. However, some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “openning,” “restaraunt,” “Collage,” and “experties.” A few expressions are also less natural in this context: “doing great” is conversational, and “great knowledge of this field” is broad rather than specific. Aim for accurate spelling and more precise professional collocations, such as describing relevant management experience or hospitality expertise. This would make the letter sound more fluent and assured without changing its clear meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most ideas remain clear. For example, “I have recently completed…” and “while studying I also worked…” communicate your education and experience effectively. Some grammatical errors remain. In “I was sitting right next to you during my travel,” the phrasing and article use are awkward; “during my journey” would be more natural. “We both had same destination” needs an article, and “I am Looking forward to hear back” requires a lower-case verb and the -ing form after “forward to.” There are also punctuation issues, including the comma splice in “It was really great to travel with you on that day, I learned…”. Review articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
