Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter regarding the opportunity to work for one of your restaurants.

Actually, during our journey from London to Canada, We got a chance to meet each other on the plane, and we talk about different current topics such as sports and politics. In between that, you mentioned that you have around 5 restaurants in London.

Moreover, you have also mentioned that you are in search of a good Italian chef for your 5th restaurant which is well know for pizza and pasta. I have worked as head chef in Canada's one of the top Italian restaurants. Therefore, I am personally interested in that position.

Being a mainline cook, I think i can be perfect match for that job opening because I know how to make variety of Italian dishes with minimal raw materials which will be economical yet tasty.

I hope you will accept my interest for the job application, and contact me for further interview or demonstration.

Yours Sincerely,

Dhruv Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (London to Canada flight), specified the role (Italian chef), and provided a relevant reason for your suitability (experience as a head chef and cost-effective cooking skills). The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic; using the businessman's name would have been more professional. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the meeting details, the job interest, and finally the call to action. Paragraphing is used to separate these distinct ideas, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In between that' to link sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother. Overall, the structure is clear and the message is easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'opportunity', 'economical', and 'demonstration' correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'mainline cook' (which is not standard terminology) and 'well know' (should be 'well-known'). Additionally, 'We got a chance to meet' is a bit informal for a business letter. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise professional terminology would elevate your writing to a higher band. Focus on using more natural collocations related to the culinary and business industries.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'we talk' (should be 'we talked'), 'Canada's one of the top' (should be 'one of Canada's top'), and 'make variety' (should be 'make a variety'). The use of 'i' instead of the capitalized 'I' is a recurring error that should be avoided in formal writing. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall communication of your message. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent capitalization, and try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures with fewer errors.
