Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope you're doing well. I am writing to let you know that I am looking for a job and would like to know that if their is any possibility to join any of your restaurants.

I would like to give you a short recap about the journey where we meet the last time. We meet at the Mumbai Airport VIP Lounge on 12th January, 2026 where we boarded the same plane and had a good conversation about the restaurants you have.

I am interested in the Finance and the Accounting job, as I have been working as a Finance manager for the last seven years. In addition, I am a qualified Chattered Accountant, therefore I can also manage the tax return and legal government formalities for all the restaurants your own.

I think I am over qualified for the job, because I have an exposure to work with local as well as with the international clients from different countries such as India and Canada, so I have knowledge about the laws and regulations of both the countries.

Hoping to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,

Dan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient of the meeting context, specified your interest in a finance role, and provided a strong justification for your suitability based on your professional background. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurate; for instance, you mentioned 'restaurants your own' which is a minor grammatical slip, but the core message remains clear and professional throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'therefore' to link your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between paragraphs are smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to read and understand.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary relevant to the business context, such as 'Finance manager', 'qualified', and 'regulations'. There are some minor errors, such as 'Chattered Accountant' (should be 'Chartered') and 'restaurants your own' (should be 'restaurants you own'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in word choice and spelling. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations related to the hospitality or finance industries to elevate the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'if their is any possibility' (should be 'if there is') and 'where we meet the last time' (should be 'where we met'). Additionally, 'I have an exposure to work' is slightly unnatural; 'I have experience working' would be more accurate. Despite these errors, the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free, and your meaning is never in doubt. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and tense consistency will help you achieve a higher score.
