Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to contact you as suggested by you to enquire about the suitable job for me in your chain of restaurants.
We met during our plane journey to US in month of March. During our conversation about studies and jobs, you recommended me to reach out to you to know about any appropriate job openings for me.
I have graduated with Hospitality and Management Diploma this month with gpa 4. I am interested in any job related to management of restaurant since I would be able to use best of my skills that I learned during my course.
In addition to my relevant studies, I also gained some experience in customer service during my previous job as Team Supervisor at Canada's Wonderland. I have developed excellent communication and problem solving skills. Moreover, I have flexible schedule to work. All these skills make me suitable for working with your incredible restaurant team.
Thank you for your time. Looking forward to hear from you.
Kind Regards,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify your interest in a management-related role, and provide relevant evidence of your suitability through your diploma and previous work experience. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific type of restaurant management role you are seeking or provide more detail on how your skills would specifically benefit his particular chain of restaurants, which would add more depth to your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition to' and 'Moreover', to link your points. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some of the sentence structures are slightly repetitive in their construction. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this', 'that') is used more precisely would improve the flow and cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hospitality', 'communication', and 'problem-solving' effectively. The language is generally natural and appropriate for a formal business letter. There are a few minor inaccuracies, such as 'enquire about the suitable job for me' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'I have flexible schedule' (missing an article). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic business expressions. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly without any significant misunderstandings.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several small grammatical errors, particularly with articles (e.g., 'to US', 'in month of March', 'with gpa 4') and prepositions. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. You also have a minor error in the closing: 'Looking forward to hear from you' should be 'Looking forward to hearing from you'. Focusing on proofreading for small articles and verb forms after prepositions will help you achieve greater accuracy.
