Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Raj,

I am writing this letter regarding the job that we discussed recently. I would like to reminf you that we recently traveled from Delhi to Surat and your seat allocation is besides me. During that time we had a discussion about a job in one of your restaurants chains in Surat.

I am currently pursuing masters in mechanical engineering and I am interested in a part time work. I have an excellent cooking skills which I learned from my mom. I am particularly interested in a cook position in one of your restaurant which is located near the Surat railway station.

I think I would be the perfect candidate for this work as apart from culinary skills I am proficient in communication which is must requirement for any business and to interact with customers. In addition to that, last year during my summer break, I was enrolled in a certificate course of cooking where I learnt to make 25 different multi-cultural cuisines. This opportunity helps to become financial independent and gain some experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the meeting context (Delhi to Surat flight), specified your interest in a cook position, and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, including your culinary course and communication skills. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your explanation of why you are suitable is more deeply developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how your mechanical engineering background might bring a unique perspective to kitchen management or efficiency.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that' and 'I am currently', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother. For example, the jump from discussing your engineering degree to your cooking skills is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases would improve the overall cohesion and make the letter feel more professional and polished.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'culinary skills', 'proficient', and 'multi-cultural cuisines'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'seat allocation is besides me' (should be 'was beside me') and 'this opportunity helps to become financial independent' (should be 'financially independent'). While these errors do not impede communication, improving your control over word forms and collocations would help you achieve a higher score. Try to incorporate more precise professional terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'I would like to reminf you' (spelling), 'your seat allocation is besides me' (tense and preposition error), and 'I have an excellent cooking skills' (article/plurality error). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing past events versus current intentions.
