Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to enquire regarding the job opportunity in one of your restaurants.
I am Palak, I hope you remember me. We met last Thursday, while flying to Dubai from Mumbai in the plane, we were sitting next to each other. During our conversation, you told me about the several restaurants you owned.
Recently, I have completed my degree in Hospitality, and I am curious to gain some practical experience in the same industry. Additionally, I am not planning for further studies for at least one year, so I am available to work full time. I am interested to work in a managerial position.
I worked as a Food Service Supervisor, during my studies. I believe, I have required skills and experience for the position.
I appreciate if you could help me in finding the suitable job for me. I am looking forward to hear from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Palak Singla.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient of the meeting context, specified your interest in a managerial role, and provided a relevant reason for your suitability by mentioning your degree and previous experience as a Food Service Supervisor. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a business contact. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding your specific skills or the type of restaurant environment you are interested in, which would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated approach to the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'During our conversation' to link ideas. However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between your educational background and your work experience is smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enquire', 'opportunity', 'practical experience', and 'managerial position'. These are appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'I am not planning for further studies' (better: 'I am not planning to pursue further studies') and 'finding the suitable job' (better: 'finding a suitable position'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise professional terminology would elevate your writing to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I appreciate if you could help me' should be 'I would appreciate it if you could help me'. Additionally, there is a comma splice in the second paragraph: '...flying to Dubai from Mumbai in the plane, we were sitting next to each other.' Despite these errors, your meaning is never in doubt, and the grammar does not impede communication. Focusing on conditional structures and punctuation will help improve your accuracy.
