Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to remind our conversation regarding the employment offer of supervisor position in your restaurant located at Ottawa Downtown location.

Actually, we met at a flight from London to Ottawa last week on Sunday and we have a very long conversations on hospitality industry operations. Along with this, we have also discussed about employment opportunities in this growing industry.

To be honest, I am interested in management positions because I holds a extensive experience in running a profitable restaurant from last five years. Therefore, I think I will be a great asset to your company.

The principal reason behind best candidate for this vacancy is that I can bring my vast experience to your enterprise, which can take your enterprise to different heights because I can bring my previous connection with me to save costs on labour and overall functioning of a restaurant.

It will be a great honour for me to become a part of your successful team.

Yours faithfully,

Dilpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully identified the meeting context, specified your interest in a management position, and provided reasons for your suitability. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic given you met the person personally. To improve, ensure your reasons for suitability are more specific; for instance, instead of mentioning 'saving costs on labour' in a vague way, you could highlight specific management achievements or certifications that would directly benefit his restaurant chain.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your points easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Along with this', 'Therefore', and 'The principal reason behind', which help link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is smoother, particularly in the second paragraph where the connection between the flight conversation and the job discussion could be more fluid.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hospitality industry operations', 'employment opportunities', and 'enterprise'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'remind our conversation' (should be 'remind you of our conversation') and 'holds a extensive experience' (should be 'have extensive experience'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic professional expressions would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical inaccuracies that occur throughout the text. For example, 'we met at a flight' should be 'on a flight', and 'I holds a extensive' contains subject-verb agreement and article errors. Additionally, 'The principal reason behind best candidate' is grammatically incomplete. While these errors rarely impede the overall meaning, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage to improve your accuracy.
