Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear john
Hope my letter finds you well, I will just quickly introduce myself first to just refresh your memory. We met on the flight from Germany to Canada we were sitting together and you mentioned that you runs chain business of restaurants and you also mentioned that you need a chief for your new location in Canada and currently am seeking for an job opportunity so, I thought I should write you about this if you are still looking a person for that position then I will be happy to join you. As I have mentioned on flight as well that I have 10 years of experience in restaurant senior chief I thought this will be a great opportunity for me.
Since my current restaurant owner is going to shut down the place so, I thought I can give it a try to write to you. If your offer is still on please send me an mail. I really hope to hear from you soon.
Kind Regards,
Gurpreet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: reminding the recipient of the meeting, stating the desired job, and explaining suitability. However, the development of these points is somewhat basic. While you mention your 10 years of experience, the explanation of why you are suitable could be more persuasive and professional. The tone is generally appropriate for a semi-formal business letter, though it leans slightly informal in places. To improve, ensure you expand on your professional skills to better convince the reader of your value as a candidate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is easy to follow, and there is a logical progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as one large block of text. Using clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the main body points, and the closing would significantly improve the structure. Additionally, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat repetitive, relying heavily on 'and' and 'so'. Incorporating a wider variety of linking words, such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'given that', would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'opportunity' and 'experience'. However, there are several word choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'chief' instead of 'chef', 'runs chain business' instead of 'runs a chain of restaurants', and 'seeking for an job' instead of 'seeking a job'. These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise professional terminology and ensuring correct article usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement ('you runs'), incorrect preposition usage ('mentioned on flight'), and punctuation errors, particularly the lack of commas in long, run-on sentences. The sentence 'I will just quickly introduce myself first to just refresh your memory' is grammatically clunky. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors impacts the overall accuracy of the writing. Focusing on sentence boundaries and basic verb forms will help improve your score.
