Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Alex,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing this to you because you told me that you can possibly grant me a job in one of your restaurants.
Last Saturday, while flying from LA to New York we were in a same row and I during takeoff we started talking about our personal life and after I told you I just left my job then you told me to remember you to get into profession again if I am qualified.
Talking about my academics, I have completed Masters in Hotel Management in 2019. After that, I worked in 5 stars hotel for 5 years as a deputy manager, so I think that role as a manager would be suitable for me.
I think that I am one of your great options for this job as I have been working for 5 years for the same role I am interested in and can assure you that I can perform great.
I have attached my CV and academic document in this letter. Hope, you will address my letter and choose me for this role.
Sincerely,
Abg

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting, specified your interest in a management role, and provided relevant justification based on your academic and professional background. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional follow-up letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the meeting and the job offer is explained with slightly more professional nuance, as the current phrasing 'grant me a job' sounds a bit informal. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused on the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'After that' and 'Talking about my academics,' to transition between points. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more precise. For example, the transition between the meeting details and your qualifications could be smoother to avoid a slightly abrupt shift in topic.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'academic document,' 'deputy manager,' and 'qualified.' However, there are some instances of slightly unnatural word choice, such as 'grant me a job' or 'perform great.' To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to professional correspondence. For instance, instead of saying 'perform great,' you could use 'contribute effectively to your team.' The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'we were in a same row' (should be 'the same row'), 'I during takeoff' (unnecessary 'I'), and 'worked in 5 stars hotel' (should be 'a 5-star hotel'). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles would significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
