Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr Sali

I am writing regarding our meeting on the flight from Ireland to London last week.We had an opportunity to discuss about a lot of topics and eventually we talked about my career. Then you suggested me to write to you about my job preference and explain why I am suitable for the same.

I have already completed my post graduation in business management with the core subject as the procurement topics. Also, I have three years of experience as a purchasing manager in a retail store. My job duties involves preparing invoices, negotiating prices and interacting with the customers. These experience helps me to be fit any role in the procurement department.

In your restaurants, I think with my handful experience I can talk with the suppliers and buy the products in a profitable margin which helps to boost your sales. Moreover,as discussed we can work out on the plan how to make a centralized purchase for all of the restaurants.

I am looking forward to hearing form you.

Sincerely

Jiya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly identified the context of the meeting, specified your interest in a procurement role, and provided relevant professional background to support your suitability. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific examples of how your skills would directly benefit a restaurant chain, such as mentioning specific types of food supplies or inventory management software, which would further demonstrate your professional expertise and engagement with the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Also' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition between your educational background and your work experience could be smoother. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is consistent; the current structure is functional, but using more varied linking phrases would improve the overall cohesion and make the text feel more natural and professional.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Terms like 'procurement', 'negotiating prices', and 'centralized purchase' are well-chosen and relevant to the context. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'handful experience' (which should be 'extensive experience' or 'considerable experience') and 'fit any role' (which should be 'fit for any role'). While these errors do not impede communication, refining your collocations would elevate your writing. You have a good foundation, but incorporating more precise professional terminology would help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical slips that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'suggested me to write' is incorrect; it should be 'suggested that I write'. You also have subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'These experience helps' (should be 'This experience helps') and 'My job duties involves' (should be 'My job duties involve'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of reporting verbs.
