Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear manager,

I am writing to express ideas stated in meeting held last week in cafeteria regarding job purposes. Therefore, I would like to discuss my opportunities for same.

Generally, I have much experience about restaurant management skills and substitute work offerings in it. Moreover, I worked as receptionist in hotels and have a great experience of dealing with customers. In addition, the way you advised me to work at your place made me feel so confident and comfortable to come up with my new identity. Mainly, both receptionists and work manager are suitable jobs for me.

Usually, I am suitable with both the jobs as I have many qualifications regarding same. And I can make it confidential my serving trial jobs in your restaurant. I will feel so thankful of you.

Thankyou for your time and attention. I will be waiting for positive response from your team and managers.

Your sincerely,

Gagan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: it mentions the meeting, identifies the desired job, and explains suitability. However, the development of these points is somewhat weak. The reference to the meeting is vague ('meeting held last week in cafeteria'), and the explanation of suitability relies on repetitive phrasing ('qualifications regarding same') rather than specific, persuasive details. The tone is also inconsistent; while it attempts a formal register, the phrasing is often unnatural, which hinders the professional impact required for a job application letter. To improve, focus on providing more concrete examples of your experience and ensuring the tone remains consistently professional throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused. For example, 'Therefore' at the start of the second sentence does not logically follow the previous statement, and 'Generally' and 'Usually' are used as fillers rather than to guide the reader through a logical argument. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'same' to refer back to previous ideas, which is not standard in formal English. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words will help the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety expected at higher bands. There is a reliance on basic or incorrectly used phrases, such as 'job purposes', 'substitute work offerings', and 'make it confidential my serving trial jobs'. These phrases are not standard collocations and make the meaning difficult to grasp in places. To achieve a higher score, focus on learning common professional collocations related to employment and avoid using 'same' as a pronoun, which is a common error in this text. Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you express your professional background more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and some attempted complex structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as 'I am suitable with both the jobs' (should be 'suitable for') and 'I will feel so thankful of you' (should be 'grateful to you'). There are also issues with article usage and preposition choice throughout the text. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and standard prepositional phrases will significantly improve the accuracy of your sentences.
