Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mr. Clarke,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to remind you about our meeting on the flight from Nelson to Calgary two weeks ago. I was passenger sitting next to you and we had a pleasant conversation about you chain of restaurants. During our discussion, you kindly suggested that I contact you regarding possible job opportunities.
I am interested in working as a Restaurant Supervisor or Assistant Manager in one of your restaurants. I have several years of experience managing staff, dealing with customers and handling daily operations. I have a good communication and time management skills, which will allow me to work with employees and other members.
I think I would be a suitable candidate because I have strong organized skills and enjoy working in a fast=paces environment. In my previous job, I was responsible for supervising employees, solving customer complains and ensuring high quality service. I am also quick learner, confident and hardworking person.
I have attached my resume for your consideration. I would be grateful if you could let me know whether there are any vacancies available for this role. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (flight from Nelson to Calgary), specify the desired roles (Restaurant Supervisor or Assistant Manager), and provide relevant justifications for your suitability, such as your experience in staff management and customer service. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The response is well-structured and covers all requirements of the task effectively, demonstrating a good understanding of the formal letter format.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the initial reminder of the meeting to your job interest and finally your qualifications. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'During our discussion,' 'In my previous job,' and 'I have attached my resume,' which help to link the sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is clear and supports the overall structure of the letter, making it easy for the reader to follow your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'vacancies,' 'consideration,' and 'operations.' However, there are a few minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'you chain' (should be 'your chain'), 'fast=paces' (should be 'fast-paced'), and 'organized skills' (should be 'organizational skills'). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally. To reach a higher band, focus on ensuring correct word forms and avoiding small typographical errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are some minor errors, such as 'I was passenger' (missing the article 'a'), 'a good communication and time management skills' (incorrect article usage with plural nouns), and 'I am also quick learner' (missing an article). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. Your control over punctuation and sentence structure is generally good, and the formal tone is maintained throughout the letter.
