Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Park,
I am writing to express my desire to work for your restaurant, which is located in Toronto. We crossed paths last week on an Air Canada flight from Toronto to Ottawa, we spoke briefly about your business and my background. I am planning to move to Toronto and have been looking for a full-time role.
Firstly, I have done master’s of economics and accounting from University of Ottawa. Your company is hiring for a accounting manager role. For the last three years, I have been working as lead accountant at Woodbine hotel in Ottawa, and managing 10+ brances across North America. Secondly, I am the focal point of all financial decisions at my work place and have been managing $10million worth of accounting.
Furthermore, I would like to grow profesionally and personally in near future, and Toronto is Canada’s financial hub and favourite tourist spot. I have learning mindset, adaptability, project management and dedication skills towards my work, which are the fundamentals to success.
I would therefore be greateful if could forward my application to the hiring manager. Should you require more information, I would be happy to provide at your earliest convenience.
Yours sincerely,
Klark.

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify your interest in an accounting manager role, and provide relevant professional experience to justify your suitability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter, although the salutation 'Dear Park' is slightly unusual as it uses a surname without a title. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, providing a clear professional profile that aligns with the businessman's suggestion. The response is well-structured and maintains a professional focus throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to your qualifications and finally to your closing request. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore' to guide the reader through your points. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the connection between sentences in the second paragraph could be smoother. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of your request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. Overall, the flow is clear and coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your professional background, such as 'focal point', 'adaptability', and 'financial hub'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'brances' instead of 'branches', 'profesionally' instead of 'professionally', and 'greateful' instead of 'grateful'. Additionally, 'I have learning mindset' is missing an article ('a'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on refining your spelling and ensuring more natural collocations, particularly when describing your professional attributes and experience.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I have done master’s of economics' (should be 'a master's degree in economics') and 'I would be happy to provide at your earliest convenience' (missing an object, 'provide it'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there is a comma splice in the first paragraph: '...Toronto to Ottawa, we spoke...'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. Increasing the accuracy of articles and prepositions will help improve your score in this criterion.
