Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Aakash and I met you during a flight trip to Toronto on the 15th of May. I am writing this letter regarding employment at one of your restaurants as suggested by you during our conversation.
As you know, I have done my education in Commerce with specialization in Finance. Therefore, I am looking for opportunity of ERP Analyst. I am always interested in handling this software as it relates to what I have studied.
I believe I would be a suitable candidate for this position because I give attention to detail which is a big requirement for this role. Moreover, I am extremely confident while using this software as I recently completed by internship which allowed me to have hands-on experience. In addition, I am hardworking, reliable, and able to remain calm under pressure.
I would be grateful if you could let me know whether there are any suitable vacancies available. I have attached my resume for your consideration and would be pleased to attend an interview at your convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Aakash Srivastav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight to Toronto on May 15th), specified the desired role (ERP Analyst), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your educational background and internship experience. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on how your specific skills would benefit his particular restaurant chain, as this would demonstrate a more sophisticated development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct point, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Therefore' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth and natural. To improve further, ensure that the transition between your educational background and the specific job role is even more seamless to avoid any slight choppiness in the flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'specialization', 'candidate', and 'vacancies' correctly. The language is professional and fits the context of a job inquiry. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'done my education' (should be 'completed my education') and 'completed by internship' (should be 'completed my internship'). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing, showing a slightly wider range of vocabulary related to professional environments.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, which allows for easy communication. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the preposition error in 'flight trip to Toronto' (simply 'flight to Toronto' is more natural) and the previously mentioned 'completed by internship'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the formal structure of the letter is well-maintained. Continued attention to small grammatical details and prepositions will help you move toward a higher band.
