Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to remind you about the conversation we had in the flight from Toronto to Vancouver when I had the pleasure sitting next to you. We talked about the successful chains of restaurants you have and you kindly suggest me that I can contact you if I was interested working for you company.

I am particularly interested in Supervisor position as I had a previous experience in hospitality industry along with supervisor experience in one of the busiest hotel in Toronto. I enjoy interacting with people, managing staff and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

I believe that I would be a most suited person for this role as I am hardworking, responsible and confident while interacting with people. From my previous experience, I gained the experience hoe to deal with customer complaints, manage staff and work under pressure. I am a quick learner to so I would be happy to take on additional responsibilities too.

I would be very grateful if you could let me know if there is any suitable vacancy at present. I would be happy to send you my CV or attend an interview at your convenience.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Simrat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (Toronto to Vancouver flight), specify the desired role (Supervisor), and provide relevant justifications for your suitability, such as your background in the hospitality industry and your ability to manage staff. The tone is appropriately formal for a business letter. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands exactly why you are writing and what you are offering. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the request. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the initial meeting to your qualifications and finally to the call to action. You use cohesive devices such as 'I am particularly interested in', 'I believe that', and 'From my previous experience' to link your thoughts effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. The flow is smooth, and the letter is easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'hospitality industry', 'ensure everything runs smoothly', and 'at your convenience' are well-chosen and appropriate for a professional context. There are some minor errors, such as 'suggest me' instead of 'suggested that I', and the typo 'hoe' instead of 'how'. However, these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common professional terminology to show greater flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are some grammatical slips, such as 'in the flight' (should be 'on the flight'), 'you kindly suggest me' (should be 'suggested that I'), and 'a most suited person' (should be 'the most suitable person'), the majority of your sentences are clear and error-free. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and the errors present do not cause any confusion for the reader. The letter maintains a consistent and professional tone throughout.
