Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Sterling,

I am writing to follow up on our conversation during our flight from New York to London last Tuesday, August 25th. We sat next to each other in row 14, and you mentioned your Successful chain of bistro style restaurants, Artisan Eats. You kindly suggested that I reach out regarding potential employment opportunities within your organization.

I am highly interested in applying for a Assistant Restaurant Manager position at one of your London locations. Having managed daily operations in fast-paced dining environments for the past three years, I am keen to bring my expertise in staff coordination and guest relations to your team.

I believe I am an excellent fit for this role because of my proven track role in optimizing inventory control and improving customer satisfaction scores by 25% at mt previous establishment. My strong communication skills and passion high-quality service align perfectly with the values you described during our journey.

Thank you for your time and for inspiring me with your business journey during our flight. I have attached my resume for your review and would welcome the opportunity to discuss how my background can support your restaurant's continued growth.

Yours sincerely,

Alex Mercer

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight from New York to London), specified the desired role (Assistant Restaurant Manager), and provided a strong justification for your suitability by highlighting your experience in operations and customer satisfaction. The tone is consistently professional and appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, meeting all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the meeting to the job application and finally the closing. Cohesive devices such as 'Having managed...', 'I believe...', and 'Thank you for...' are used naturally to link sentences and paragraphs. The structure is coherent throughout, and the use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, ensuring the reader can follow your points without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a strong command of vocabulary, using precise terms such as 'potential employment opportunities', 'fast-paced dining environments', and 'optimizing inventory control'. The language is sophisticated and fits the professional context perfectly. There is a minor typo ('mt' instead of 'my') and a missing preposition ('passion for high-quality'), but these are rare slips that do not detract from the overall high quality of your lexical range. You show a good awareness of collocation and formal style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The writing displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and participial phrases like 'Having managed daily operations...'. The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There is a minor grammatical error ('a Assistant' should be 'an Assistant') and a missing preposition, but these are infrequent and do not impede communication. Your ability to construct varied and accurate sentences is a clear strength.
