Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mr Brown,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing regarding the conversation we had during our recent flight from Toronto to Vancouver, as you kindly suggested that I contact you about a possible job opportunity in one of your restaurants.
Firstly, I would like to express my interest in working as a Restaurant Supervisor or Customer Service Assistant. I have always enjoyed working with people and believe that this position would allow me to use my communication and organisational skills effectively. In addition, I am eager to learn new skills and contribute to the success of your business.
I believe I would be a suitable candidate for this position because I have previous experience in customer service and enjoy working in a fast-paced environment. In addition, I am responsible, hardworking, and able to work well as part of a team. During our conversation, you mentioned that your restaurants value employees with a positive attitude, and I believe these qualities would enable me to contribute effectively to your organisation.
I would appreciate it if you could consider my application and let me know if there are any suitable vacancies. I would be grateful for the opportunity to attend an interview at your convenience.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Navpreet Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient of the meeting context (flight from Toronto to Vancouver), specified the roles you are interested in (Restaurant Supervisor or Customer Service Assistant), and provided logical reasons for your suitability, such as your previous experience and positive attitude. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements, demonstrating a strong understanding of the communicative goal.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the specific request and finally the closing. You have used cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'During our conversation', which help to guide the reader through the text. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the transition between the mention of the meeting and the job application is smooth. The structure is coherent and easy to follow throughout.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context. Phrases like 'job opportunity', 'contribute to the success', and 'at your convenience' are well-chosen and natural. While the vocabulary is accurate and fits the context well, it remains somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or nuanced professional terminology. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your message precisely without any errors in word choice or collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The writing displays a high level of grammatical control. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'I would appreciate it if you could...' and relative clauses. Punctuation is accurate, and there are no noticeable grammatical errors. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the tone is consistently professional. The control over verb tenses and modal verbs is excellent, ensuring that the request is polite and clear.
