Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Kapoor,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to continue our follow-up conversation on our last week flight journey.

Last week, I was travelled by plane from Mumbai to London and you seated next to me. During our formal conversation, I came to know about your chain of restaurants business and I displayed my interest and requested you to give me a managerial placement in one of your establishments.

As per my pervious work history, a managerial position is suitable for me, because, I have four years experience as a manager and my professional skills and educational background encourage me for this post. Moreover, my communication, cooperation, time-management, critical-thinking and teamwork skills are admirable. Additionally, I am polite, confident, discipline and responsible person, which allows me to create friendly environment at workplace and build good relationship with customers and colleagues.

It would be appreciated if you could appoint me as a manager in one of your establishments. I look forward to your positive response in this matter.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Twinkle

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting (Mumbai to London flight), specify the desired role (managerial position), and provide relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your four years of experience and specific professional skills. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your skills and the specific needs of a restaurant chain is more explicitly articulated, rather than just listing general professional attributes. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Additionally' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the transition between the meeting details and the job request is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is easy to follow, though the progression of ideas is occasionally slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'managerial placement' and 'professional skills' are relevant and well-used. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'pervious work history' (should be 'previous') and 'discipline person' (should be 'disciplined'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated business-related terminology would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I was travelled' (should be 'I travelled') and 'you seated next to me' (should be 'you were sitting' or 'you sat'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and adjective forms, such as 'create friendly environment' (should be 'a friendly environment'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of passive versus active voice.
