Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Ratan Tata ,
I hope you are doing well, I am Dirgh and I was seating next to you when you were traveling to Bangalore for grand opening of your new restaurant on 1 August.
During our journey, you get fascinated with my good speaking skills and you suggest me to work in your restaurant. After thinking a lot and understanding your business good reputation I decided to contribute my skills at receptionist desk.
I complete my graduation in hotel management from Bangalore and then I worked as an intern in Taj hotel at customer service desk. I collected a lot of certificate from my previous work because of my welcoming and
problem solving nature. Furthermore, your restaurants give more focus in customer services, by which your customers trust in your restaurant and with my skills I can enhance that trust.
Thank you for your time, I am waiting for your response.
Your faithful
Dirgh Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully identified the context of the meeting, specified the desired role (receptionist), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your hotel management degree and internship experience. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter, although some phrasing is slightly informal. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your skills and the specific needs of the businessman's restaurant chain is more explicitly articulated. Overall, the task is fully addressed and the purpose of the letter is clear to the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, moving from the initial meeting to the job request and finally to your qualifications. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'During our journey' to link ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat basic. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'that trust') is always precise would help elevate the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hotel management', 'intern', and 'customer service'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'get fascinated' instead of 'were impressed' and 'collected a lot of certificate' instead of 'received several certificates'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a need for more precise vocabulary usage. To improve, focus on learning common collocations used in professional correspondence and ensure that nouns are correctly pluralized when referring to multiple items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I was seating' (should be 'sitting'), 'you suggest me' (should be 'suggested that I'), and 'I complete my graduation' (should be 'I completed my degree'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma usage after introductory phrases. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on verb tense consistency and subject-verb agreement will significantly improve your accuracy.
