Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this to enquire about the job opening position for manufacturing technician. We talked about this in flight when we travelled from toronto to thunder bay last month on 25th June. And we talked a lot about your manufacturing company and its operations. Hope you remember me now.
I am really interested in the manufacturing technician post which is opened in automotive manufacturing company. I was actively searching for this job role because i can use my skills and knowledge for the growth of the company and for me as well.
I know how significant this position to your plant and i think i can handle the roles and responsibilities because I am from strong mechanical and manufacturing background and have 3 years of experience in the tire manufacturing industries. Mainly from mixing department, which is essential for Auto Corp company as well.
Moreover, If that position is still open I am ready to commute to thunder bay and ready to join immediately. I can share the resume to the email address you provide me on that day for your references.
Looking forward for your prompt and response.
Yours sincerely,
Joseph Varghese

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the meeting context (flight from Toronto to Thunder Bay), specified the desired role, and provided relevant background information to justify your suitability. However, there is a significant misunderstanding of the task instructions: the prompt explicitly mentions the businessman owns a 'chain of restaurants,' but you have written your letter regarding a 'manufacturing technician' role in an 'automotive manufacturing company.' This inconsistency suggests a failure to read the prompt carefully, which impacts the task achievement score. To improve, ensure you align your content strictly with the scenario provided in the task instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'However' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by repetitive sentence structures and some awkward phrasing, such as 'Hope you remember me now,' which is slightly too informal for a professional letter. The transition between the meeting details and the job application is clear, but the overall progression could be smoother with more varied linking words and better control over paragraph transitions. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel disjointed.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using industry-specific terms like 'manufacturing technician' and 'mixing department.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'job opening position' (redundant) and 'the email address you provide me' (should be 'provided'). There is also a lack of variety in your vocabulary, with frequent repetition of words like 'manufacturing' and 'company.' To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise professional terminology and avoid redundant phrasing. Your spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'I know how significant this position to your plant' is missing a verb ('is'), and 'Looking forward for your prompt and response' should be 'Looking forward to your prompt response.' Additionally, there are issues with article usage ('the tire manufacturing industries') and pronoun consistency. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions to improve your accuracy.
