Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Jon,

I hope you are doing well! I am writing to apply for the job at one of your restaurants.

My name is Harman and we meet on a fight to Vancouver on Monday last week. I was sitting next you by the window seat. On our journey we had conversation about business management, employee morale and Human resources. Moreover, you mentioned about your restaurants business and ongoing employment issues in your restaurants.

I am currently working as an Assistant Store Manager at a local Superstore. My work duties include inventory, replenishment and procurement. In addition, I also overlook hiring and training of employees. I have five years of experience in management position with proven track of incentives and employment rate.

I think I am suitable for Store Manager position because I have clear communication skills, empathy and strong organisational skills. Additionally, I can help you with employee hiring and retention in your stores. Hence, building strong teams across the stores and reducing the ongoing issues of employment. I hope to hear back from you soon! I have attached my resume with the letter for employment history. I cannot wait to join your team.

Kind regards,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting, specified the desired role, and provided relevant professional justification for your suitability. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed, particularly regarding your current experience as an Assistant Store Manager, which directly relates to the potential role. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are fully integrated; for example, you could have elaborated slightly more on how your specific management style would benefit his particular restaurant chain.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to your professional background and finally to your suitability for the role. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Hence' to link your sentences. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. To improve, try to vary the way you introduce new points to ensure the flow feels more natural and less like a list of facts. Overall, the message is easy to follow and the structure is sound.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your professional experience, using terms like 'procurement', 'replenishment', and 'retention'. There are some minor inaccuracies in collocation, such as 'overlook hiring' (should be 'oversee') and 'proven track of incentives' (which is slightly unclear). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice. You have a good grasp of professional terminology, but expanding your repertoire of idiomatic expressions or more sophisticated collocations would help elevate your writing to a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'we meet on a fight' (should be 'we met on a flight') and 'sitting next you' (should be 'sitting next to you'). Additionally, 'management position' should be 'a management position'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
