Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

Recently we had traveled together in a airline from Dubai to Mumbai last week. I sat next to you and we had some interesting conversation during journey.

I shared my education background to you. And you also gave me a brief me with your multiple restaurants in different countries and offered me opportunity to start my career in one of your restaurants. I have recently completed my Hotel management course. During my course I was working part time as a chef assistant in well known restaurant Taste Of India in Mumbai.it was a Multi cuisine restaurant. I have learned to make different dishes, unique presentations, tried fusion dishes and also customer service. Therefore I consider myself to fit in one of your restaurants as a senior chef.

I have attached my resume with this letter. Please let me know if you think I can get chance to work in your restaurant and take a step ahead. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Thank you

Alvina

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify your interest in a senior chef position, and provide relevant background information regarding your education and experience to justify your suitability. The tone is appropriate for a professional letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening is more formal; 'Dear Sir' is acceptable, but since you met the person, a name would be better if known. Additionally, ensure the connection between your skills and the specific needs of his restaurant chain is more explicitly articulated to strengthen your case.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your narrative. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'In addition' (implied) to connect ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For instance, the transition between your education and your work experience could be smoother. Some referencing is slightly repetitive, and the use of linking words could be more varied to improve the overall flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'multi-cuisine', 'fusion dishes', and 'resume'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'brief me with your multiple restaurants' (should be 'briefed me on') and 'fit in one of your restaurants' (should be 'fit into'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations related to professional employment and hospitality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'we had traveled' (should be 'we traveled'), 'in a airline' (should be 'on an airline'), and 'I shared my education background to you' (should be 'with you'). Additionally, there are punctuation and capitalization issues, such as 'it was a Multi cuisine restaurant' (should be 'It was a multi-cuisine restaurant'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help raise your score in this criterion.
