Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hlo Sir,

I hope you are well. I am Manpreet Kaur who met you while in plane yesterday . I am writing this letter regarding job vacancy in your restaurants as you mentioned. To more clear about myself, I wanted to remind you that I was siting next to you and then we both started talking about our professions. While conversation, I came across that you are the owner of many restaurants and during that time, I also mentioned about my unemployment situation. At last, you told me to contact with your company directly.

About my job description, I am more willing to work as a cook as I have more than five years experience in many restaurants and also certified with food handling certificate. I would be highly grateful if you give me an opportunity to show my cooking skills.

For more information, I have attached my resume along with the certifications.

I am looking forward to your quick response.

Thanks and Regards,

Manpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully reminded the recipient of the meeting context, identified your interest in a cook position, and provided a justification for your suitability through your experience and certification. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter, although the opening 'Hlo Sir' is informal and should be replaced with 'Dear [Name]' or 'Dear Sir/Madam'. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, fulfilling the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'About my job description' and 'For more information' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For instance, 'While conversation' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is sufficient to guide the reader through the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'unemployment situation', 'certified', and 'opportunity'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'To more clear about myself' (should be 'To be clearer') and 'contact with your company' (should be 'contact your company'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations and word forms to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'I am Manpreet Kaur who met you while in plane' (missing articles), 'I was siting' (spelling error), and 'I came across that you are the owner' (incorrect verb usage). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on article usage, verb tense consistency, and proofreading for minor spelling mistakes.
