Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hi John,

I hope you are doing good. Recently, we were travelling together through Atlantic Airline going from London to Birmingham and you give some introduction about your restaurant’s businesses.

During our discussion, I requested you about the restaurant job in our area. I have done many certifications in restaurant/hotel management and achieved level 3 certification’s. Furthermore, I have about 7 years of experience in management field.

However, I recently visited your restaurant’s website and saw many job openings over there. I am very much keen interested as restaurant manager job. As this job is much related to my experience. In addition, customer management is also one of my role in my previous job.

However, as a customer I have visited your restaurant twice in a week and found mostly busy and overcrowded with the customers. So managing customers in efficient and effective way is very much demanding role in your restaurant and my experience is mostly related to this. For reference, I attached my detail resume so that you can go through my profile. I hope you will consider my request.

Thank you.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You reminded the recipient of the meeting, specified the role you are interested in, and provided a clear justification for your suitability by highlighting your certifications and experience. The tone is generally appropriate for a business-related letter, although the opening 'Hi John' is slightly informal for a professional contact made on a plane; 'Dear Mr [Surname]' would be safer. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately. The letter is focused and maintains a professional intent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, the use of 'However' is sometimes repetitive and occasionally used where a different transition would be more natural (e.g., when introducing your interest in the website). The flow between sentences is generally clear, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used correctly to separate the introduction, the body of your qualifications, and your closing request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'certifications', 'management field', and 'efficient and effective'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'keen interested' (should be 'keenly interested' or 'very interested') and 'restaurant’s businesses' (should be 'restaurant business'). You also use 'detail resume' instead of 'detailed resume'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precision in your word forms and collocations to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'you give some introduction' (should be 'you gave'), 'I requested you about' (should be 'I asked you about'), and 'mostly busy and overcrowded with the customers' (should be 'mostly busy and overcrowded with customers'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and pluralization, such as 'certification’s' and 'management field'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on verb tense consistency and the correct use of prepositions.
