Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my interest in the Project Manager position at your Toronto restaurant and to share my updated resume.
Let me explain the situation to you, we recently met on a plane journey while travelling to Mexico. It was a great pleasure speaking with you during the four-hour journey. I was particularly inspired by hearing about how you became successful at such a young age despite the difficulties you had faced. Thank you for giving me your contact details with me and suggesting that I contact you about a possible position.
I believe my five years of experience in project management, combined with my background in the food industry, would make me a suitable candidate for this position. I have strong communication skills, time-management, managing teams and strong leadership skills. As we discussed during our conversations, I have successfully managed several projects involving teams ,budgets and tight deadlines.
I hope you will consider me for the project manager position that is currently available. Thanks for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Anuj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient of the meeting context, specified the role you are interested in, and provided relevant justifications for your suitability. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a professional follow-up. You have maintained a consistent and professional tone throughout the letter, which is essential for this type of task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'As we discussed' and 'In addition', though the flow could be slightly improved with more varied transition words. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Referencing is generally clear, though there is a minor punctuation error in the third paragraph regarding the list of skills.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'express my interest', 'suitable candidate', and 'tight deadlines'. There is an attempt to use more sophisticated phrasing, which is effective. However, there are minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'giving me your contact details with me' (redundant 'with me') and 'managing teams' (which is a gerund phrase in a list of nouns). Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free and clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as the comma splice in the second paragraph ('...situation to you, we recently met...') and the awkward phrasing in the list of skills ('...communication skills, time-management, managing teams and strong leadership skills'). Punctuation around lists needs more consistency. However, these errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication, and you show good control over verb tenses and sentence construction.
