Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Mr. Robin
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Kishan Bhavsar, and we met on a flight from Dubai to Toronto last Monday, 5 August. We were both seated in row 5, and during our conversation, we discussed your successful chain of restaurants. You were kind enough to suggest that I can get in touch with you regarding a potential employment opportunity at one of your restaurants in Toronto.
I am writing to let you know that currently I am seeking a managerial position in Toronto, preferably as a restaurant manager.
As I have over five years of experience managing busy restaurants, I am confident in my ability to contribute effectively to your team. My background includes staff supervision, inventory management, and ensuring excellent customer service standards. I am passionate about the hospitality industry and eager to bring my skills to a reputable establishment like yours. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss how I can contribute to your business. Please let me know if there are any openings or if you require any additional information from me.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Sincerely,
Kishan Bhavsar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight from Dubai to Toronto, row 5), specified the desired role (restaurant manager), and provided a strong justification for your suitability by highlighting your five years of experience and specific skill set. The tone is consistently professional and appropriate for a formal business letter. The purpose of the communication is clear from the outset, and the letter is well-structured to meet the requirements of a formal request for employment.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction establishes the connection, the second paragraph states the purpose of the letter, and the third provides supporting details. Cohesive devices such as 'As I have', 'My background includes', and 'I would appreciate' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth, making the letter easy to follow and professional in its presentation.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context. Phrases like 'potential employment opportunity', 'managerial position', and 'reputable establishment' are well-chosen and enhance the formal tone. The language is precise and natural throughout the letter. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or nuanced professional terminology could elevate the response further, but the current range is more than adequate for this task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The grammar is highly accurate, with a variety of sentence structures used correctly. You successfully employ complex sentences, such as 'As I have over five years of experience managing busy restaurants, I am confident in my ability to contribute effectively to your team.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no noticeable errors that impede communication. The control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
