Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Darren,
I am writing this to express my interest in a restaurant manager position available in one of your restaurants in Vancouver, BC.
Last week, we sat beside each other on the WestJet flight from Toronto to Vancouver, and we discussed various job vacancies in your restaurants when we were learning about each other's professional backgrounds.
I am particularly interested in this job opportunity because of my relevant academic studies and work experience. I have done my bachelor's in hotel management from BCIT, and after completion of my studies, I worked at McDonald's as restaurant manager. I have in-hand experience in customer service, which is a crucial skill for this role. I love interacting with people and try to provide them exceptional and outstanding service. I have also received the Best Manager award during my tenure at Macdonald's. This job is also in my locality, and it would be easier for me to commute.
I am attaching my resume for your review. If possible, we could schedule a Teams meeting to discuss more about this opportunity and my potential suitability. Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Aryss Dave

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify the desired role, and provide relevant justifications for your suitability, such as your academic background and previous experience. The tone is appropriate for a professional follow-up letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have maintained a consistent professional register throughout the response, which is essential for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the second paragraph provides context, the third details qualifications, and the final paragraph handles the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Last week', 'because of', and 'In addition' (implied) are used effectively to link sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall readability of the letter. The flow is smooth and the reader can easily follow your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'professional backgrounds', 'job vacancies', and 'tenure'. There is a slight repetition of 'restaurants' and 'job', but this does not hinder communication. You use some collocations effectively, such as 'schedule a meeting' and 'relevant academic studies'. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more sophisticated synonyms or idiomatic professional phrases could elevate the score further. Overall, the word choice is precise and fits the formal tone required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response shows a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, such as 'I am writing this to express...' and 'If possible, we could schedule...'. There are very few errors; for example, 'I have done my bachelor's' is slightly informal, and 'Macdonald's' has a minor spelling inconsistency compared to your earlier mention. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is strong. The grammar does not impede communication at any point.
