Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am Amrit with whom you met in a Singapore flight. I hope this letter finds you well. Today, I am writing this letter in order apply for the server position, which is visible on online site that is available in your hotel.

Commencing with the reminding, as last week me Met in a Singapore flight and I am the guy who helped your mother in finding her bag in the cabin of flight and there we met. Due to your business meeting, you gave me the visiting card and told me that contact me for job. So, for that purpose I am writing this letter to you.

Moving further, I was working as a server in Casino since 2 years. As your 'Seven Star' hotel is very near to my college so that would be convenient for me to manage both study and job. Also, with this experience I hope you will selected to me for any specific position. Even, I can handle the cash terminals smoothly and deals professionally with the customers.

I would be happy, if you gave me night shifts. However, for the day shift I am available full week except Tuesday and Thursday due to classes. Thank you for considering my application and I look forward for your response.

Best regards,

Amrit

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully reminded the recipient of the meeting context, identified the desired position, and explained your suitability. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent; while you use a formal opening, the phrasing 'I am Amrit with whom you met' is awkward and lacks the professional polish expected in a business letter. The development of ideas is generally clear, though the connection between the 'Seven Star' hotel and the 'online site' is slightly confusing. To improve, ensure that the purpose of the letter is stated more naturally and that the professional tone is maintained throughout the entire correspondence.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Commencing with,' 'Moving further,' and 'However,' to guide the reader. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced, particularly 'Commencing with the reminding.' The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'visible on online site that is available in your hotel,' which makes it difficult to follow the logic of how you found the job. Improving the flow between sentences and using more natural linking phrases would help the text read more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'convenient,' 'professionally,' and 'application.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'I am the guy who helped' (too informal), 'selected to me' (incorrect grammar/collocation), and 'reminding' used as a noun in this context. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they limit the precision of your writing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more professional collocations related to employment would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the quality of the writing. Examples include 'I am Amrit with whom you met' (should be 'I am the person you met'), 'me Met' (capitalization and pronoun error), 'since 2 years' (should be 'for 2 years'), and 'I hope you will selected to me' (incorrect verb form). While the meaning remains clear, these persistent errors in tense, word order, and verb forms indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a stronger grasp of basic English grammar rules.
