Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir,

Hope you remember me, we met on flight from Toronto to Calgary. Myself Shreyansh Mishra. I am writing this letter to know about any job opening in your restaurants.

Talking about my previous experience, I have worked as line cook supervisor for almost 4 years in a well reputed chain. Now i am looking for something better. I am interested in kitchen jobs as cooking is my passion and i want to continue passion as my profession. Working for so long in food industry had made me learn all the duties that plays vital role in running a organisation.

I think i will be a asset for your organisation as you dont have to spend much time and money to train me as i already have a good experience in same field. Beside working in kitchen i can help in other duties such as managing cash counting inventory etc. I am attaching my resume for your reference. Hoping to hear from you soon

Regards

Shreyansh Mishra

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: you identified the meeting context, specified your interest in a kitchen role, and explained your suitability through your experience. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional follow-up, though the opening 'Dear sir' is slightly generic; using the businessman's name would have been more professional. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, providing a solid foundation for the request. To improve, you could expand slightly on why your specific skills would benefit his particular restaurant chain, which would demonstrate a more tailored approach to the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the initial meeting to your professional background and finally to your offer of service. Paragraphing is present, which helps separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited; the text relies heavily on simple sentence structures and lacks a variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition'). Improving the flow between sentences would make the writing feel more cohesive and professional. The transition between your experience and your offer to help with other duties is a bit abrupt.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message, such as 'reputed chain', 'passion', and 'professional'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'made me learn all the duties that plays vital role' (should be 'play') and 'be a asset' (should be 'an asset'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the sophistication or 'less common' items that would push the score into the higher bands. Focusing on more precise professional terminology related to the hospitality industry would enhance your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentences, but there are frequent grammatical errors that detract from the overall quality. Issues include missing articles ('on flight', 'in same field'), subject-verb agreement ('duties that plays'), and punctuation errors (missing commas after introductory phrases). Additionally, the use of 'Myself Shreyansh Mishra' is grammatically incorrect in formal English; 'My name is...' or 'I am...' would be standard. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic articles and verb forms will significantly improve your accuracy.
