Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to ask you about a job vacancy in one of your restauranats that you suggested.

My name is Aman Dhaliwal and we met in plane while travelling from Calgary to Toronto. As we were sharing the seats in the plane and you told me about your restaurants that you own in Toronto and asked to contact you about the job.

Furthermore, I have completed my diploma in culinary arts from Northern college and now I am looking for a position of chef as I am very fond of cooking and want to try pursue my career in that.

In addition, during my training, I made different types of cuisines such as, Italian, Indian and Chinese and got good grades in each dish. Apart from that, I have 2 years of experience in cooking as I was a professional chef in Chinese restaurant in Calgary. Now I have moved to Toronto because of my family and looking for the same position.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (Calgary to Toronto flight), specified the desired role (chef), and provided relevant justification for your suitability (culinary diploma and two years of professional experience). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal business letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic; using the businessman's name would have been more professional. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Apart from that' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. The paragraphing is clear, which helps the reader follow the progression of your argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between your personal introduction and the job application is smoother.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'culinary arts', 'vacancy', and 'professional chef'. There are some minor spelling errors, such as 'restauranats' and 'pursue' (used incorrectly in 'try pursue'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision required for higher bands. You rely on fairly common phrasing throughout the letter. Focusing on more precise collocations related to the hospitality industry would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'we met in plane' (missing article 'a'), 'sharing the seats in the plane' (awkward phrasing), and 'in Chinese restaurant' (missing article). Additionally, the sentence 'want to try pursue my career in that' is grammatically incorrect. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. You should focus on article usage and verb patterns to improve accuracy.
