Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Rishab,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing this letter about our conversation during a recent plane journey.

If you remember, we met during a flight from Halifax from Toronto. We had a conversation together and you told me that you own a chain of restaurants, thus you can help me to get a job in one of your restaurants in Halifax, if I ever need it.

It has been almost a month since I have moved to Halifax, but I am still struggling to secure my first job. I am interested in working as a bartender in a restaurant.

I have a smart serve license. Also, I have gained three years of experience working as a bartender, provided that I can make a number of drinks. I have also invented some drinks by myself and all the customers in my previous restaurant had loved it.

I am confident that I will exceed your expectations in this role. Kindly offer me this position and I will contribute my best for the growth of your business.

Regards,

Iqbal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the context of the meeting, specify your interest in a bartender position, and provide relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your Smart Serve license and previous experience. The tone is appropriate for a professional yet semi-formal request. The ideas are well-developed, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding your availability or specific skills to further strengthen your candidacy, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the request and finally to your qualifications. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'also', 'thus', and 'if you remember' to link your sentences. While the structure is sound, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly. For instance, the transition between your experience and your confidence in the role could be smoother. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the message is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'struggling to secure', 'exceed your expectations', and 'contribute my best'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'provided that I can make a number of drinks', which sounds slightly unnatural in this context. Additionally, 'invented some drinks by myself' could be phrased more professionally. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise professional collocations would elevate your writing to a higher band. The spelling is accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. However, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'a flight from Halifax from Toronto' should be 'a flight from Halifax to Toronto'. The phrase 'provided that I can make a number of drinks' is grammatically awkward and does not clearly express your intent. There are also minor issues with tense consistency, such as 'since I have moved'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement will help improve your score.
