Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. John,
I hope this letter finds you in good health. My name is Rajesh and I am writing this letter in regards to the possible job opportunity which you have purposed me during our last meeting.
Last time, we met during our plane journey from Calgary to Toronto, on 25th of last month. We were sitting next to each other and while interacting, you informed me about your restaurant businesses.
I would really appreciate if you could assist me to get the job of a cook in one of your restaurants. I have keen interest in cooking and customer service therefore, working in a renounced restaurant as a cook would be a dream come true for me.
I believe that I would be suitable for this job because I have all the skills that are required for this profession. I have done my graduation in Hotel Management which enables me to meet the eligibility criteria. Apart from this, I have one year hands-on experience of working as a cook at a local restaurant.
I would appreciate if you consider my application for the job. I will be looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
Rajesh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (the flight from Calgary to Toronto), specified the desired role (cook), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your academic background in Hotel Management and practical experience. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening is more natural; for instance, 'purposed me' is incorrect usage. Instead, you could say 'suggested to me' or 'proposed to me'. Overall, the task is fully addressed with well-developed ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction and reminder of the meeting to the request and your qualifications. Cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'therefore' are used effectively to link sentences. However, the transition between the introduction and the second paragraph could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the overall structure is easy to follow, which meets the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'hands-on experience' and 'eligibility criteria' are used appropriately. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice. For example, you used 'purposed' instead of 'proposed' and 'renounced' instead of 'renowned'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do highlight a need for more precise vocabulary control. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context to enhance the professional tone of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The letter shows a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You successfully use subordinate clauses, such as 'I hope this letter finds you in good health' and 'I believe that I would be suitable for this job because...'. While there are occasional errors, such as 'Last time, we met during our plane journey' (which is slightly awkward) and 'I have done my graduation' (which should be 'I graduated' or 'I have completed my degree'), the majority of your sentences are error-free. The grammar is generally accurate and does not hinder the reader's understanding of your request.
