Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to remind you of the conversation during the plane journey from Montreal to Edmonton. We were sitting next to each other and had a conversation about your multi-chain Italian restaurant business where I mentioned my job search in the food industry, especially restaurants.

I would be interested in a supervisor position in your restaurant in any Edmonton location. I enjoyed working with a team and managing the daily tasks. I have two years of experience in the hospitality industry, where I developed good communication and customer service skills. I am also an organized person and like to work under pressure. My personal and social skills with sufficient experience make me suitable for this job role.

I would appreciate it if you would consider my application when there are any possible positions available. please see the attached copies of my resume and cover letter. I am able to attend virtual and in-person interview when needed.

Looking forward to a positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (the flight from Montreal to Edmonton), specified the desired role (supervisor), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your two years of experience and your ability to work under pressure. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could have expanded slightly more on your specific achievements or skills to make your candidacy even more compelling, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the initial meeting to your job interest and finally to the call to action. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am also' and 'I would appreciate it if' to link your ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. To improve, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to create a more sophisticated flow between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'hospitality industry', 'daily tasks', and 'work under pressure' are well-chosen and relevant to the context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede meaning. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise or 'less common' lexical items. For example, instead of saying 'good communication skills', you could use 'strong interpersonal skills' or 'proven ability to communicate effectively'. Your vocabulary is functional and accurate, which is appropriate for this task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your writing shows a good control of grammar with a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I am able to attend virtual and in-person interview' (should be plural 'interviews') and the lowercase 'p' in 'please see'. However, these errors are infrequent and do not interfere with the reader's understanding. You have demonstrated the ability to use complex structures, such as conditional clauses ('I would appreciate it if...'), which is a positive feature of your writing.
