Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am writing to remind you of the conversation during the plane journey from Montreal to Edmonton. We were sitting next to each other and had a conversation about your multi-chain Italian restaurant business where I mentioned my job search in the food industry, especially restaurants.

I would be interested in a supervisor position in your restaurant in any Edmonton location. I am delighted to work with a team and manage the daily tasks. I have two years of experience in the hospitality industry, where I developed good communication and customer service skills. I am also an organized person and like to work under pressure. My personal and social skills with sufficient experience make me suitable for this job role.

I would appreciate it if you would consider my application when there are any possible positions available. Please see the attached copies of my resume and cover letter. I am able to attend virtual and in-person interviews when needed.

Looking forward to a positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (the flight from Montreal to Edmonton), specified the desired role (supervisor), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your two years of experience and your ability to work under pressure. The tone is appropriate for a formal business letter, and the purpose is clear throughout. The response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction sets the scene, the body paragraph details your qualifications, and the final paragraph handles the call to action. You use cohesive devices such as 'where I mentioned', 'I am also', and 'in addition' (implied) effectively to link your sentences. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a professional context, such as 'hospitality industry', 'application', and 'customer service skills'. The word choices are generally accurate and natural. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be elevated slightly to reach a higher band by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common professional terminology. For example, instead of 'good communication skills', you might use 'strong interpersonal skills'. Overall, the lexical range is sufficient to convey your message with precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are very few errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. For instance, 'I am delighted to work with a team' is grammatically correct, though 'I enjoy working with a team' might sound more natural in this context. You demonstrate good control over punctuation and sentence construction. The majority of your sentences are error-free, which indicates a high level of grammatical competence suitable for this task.
