Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I Anamika Sharma writing regarding the conversation we had in the plane during our journey to Abbotsford BC. I hope you remembered me. You told me to let you remember if I need a job in one of your restaurant as you are having a chain of restaurants there.

Moving further, I am highly interested to apply a job as a full-time supervisor at Pita Pit and Second Cup because I have 2 years of hand-on experience at the same stores in Calgary. Moreover, I also have an experience as a supervisor at Tim Hortons and I have a deep knowledge about barista.

However, I want to assure you that I will give you my best at the job as I mentioned earlier that I have experience in this field and I can also manage all the responsibilities that one supervise should do. I hope you will provide me this opportunity.

Yours Faithfully

Anamika

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (the flight to Abbotsford), specified the desired roles (supervisor at Pita Pit and Second Cup), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability based on your previous experience. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional request, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly generic; using the businessman's name would have been more professional. The ideas are relevant and well-focused on the task requirements, ensuring the reader understands your purpose immediately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moving further' and 'Moreover' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the introduction and the body could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel slightly disjointed due to repetitive sentence structures. To reach a higher band, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally rather than as mechanical signposts, and improve the flow between the reminder of the meeting and the job application request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using industry-specific terms like 'supervisor', 'barista', and 'full-time'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'let you remember' (should be 'remind you') and 'apply a job' (should be 'apply for a job'). The phrase 'give you my best at the job' is slightly informal. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise professional collocations would enhance the quality of your writing. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly despite these minor errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I Anamika Sharma writing' (missing 'am'), 'one of your restaurant' (should be plural 'restaurants'), and 'one supervise should do' (should be 'supervisor'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.
