Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter about a job vacancy in your restaurant.

Last week, travelling from Dubai to Delhi by plane, and i was sitting to your left in seat no 11 on Air India flight No. A2160. we take with each other about work and I come to know you are looking for chef and I am interested in the chef position because I worked at Hotel Taj for 3 years and got the Best Chef Award in 2020, and I have all the required certifications as well.

I am really suitable for this; firstly, I have experience in Indian cuisine, and your menu mostly contains authentic dishes from Indian and moreover i belong to this rich culture. This is a plus point

I would be really grateful if you selected me. I have attached my resume with this and look forward to hearing from you by email or text, as per your convenience.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Ritika Vaid.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight details), specified the desired role (chef), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your experience at Hotel Taj and your award. The tone is generally appropriate for a professional letter, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is a bit generic given you met the person. To improve, ensure you fully develop your suitability by linking your skills more explicitly to the specific needs of a restaurant chain. Overall, the task requirements are met with a clear and relevant response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your narrative. You use some cohesive devices like 'firstly' and 'moreover' to connect your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally hindered by punctuation errors and run-on sentences, such as in the second paragraph where multiple clauses are joined without proper conjunctions or full stops. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the transition between the meeting details and the job application could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words would help elevate the cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'vacancy', 'certifications', and 'authentic'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'we take with each other' (should be 'we talked') and 'plus point' (which is slightly informal). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, there is a lack of more sophisticated or precise language that would be expected at a higher band level. Focusing on more formal collocations and avoiding informal phrasing will help improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. You have several grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies ('we take' instead of 'we talked', 'I come to know' instead of 'I came to know') and punctuation issues, such as missing capital letters for 'I' and improper sentence boundaries. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tense consistency and ensure that each sentence is grammatically complete with proper punctuation.
