Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr. Singh,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to follow up on our conversation during our recent flight. You kindly suggested that I contact you regarding a possible job position in one of your restaurants.
I am writing to remind you that we met during a flight from Delhi to Mumbai last weekend, when we sat next to each other and had an interesting discussion about job opportunities in your restaurant business.
I am particularly interested in a position as a restaurant supervisor. I would be happy to work either full time or part-time depending on your requirements as I am keen to develop my skills and gain experience in hospitality industry.
I believe this job is suitable for me because I am friendly in nature and responsible person. Furthermore, I am comfortable communicating with different types of people. Most importantly, I can remain calm even dealing with busy situations or some demanding customers. In addition, I always try to provide a positive experience to customer.
I would be grateful if you could give me a job opportunity in one of your restaurants. I would be happy to attend an interview at your convenience. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Divya Mistry

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the context of the meeting (flight from Delhi to Mumbai), specified the desired role (restaurant supervisor), and provided relevant reasons for your suitability, such as your ability to remain calm under pressure and your communication skills. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal business letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction to the specific request and then to your qualifications. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Most importantly', and 'In addition' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is smooth throughout the text. The letter is easy to follow, and the relationship between the ideas is clearly established.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'follow up on our conversation', 'keen to develop my skills', and 'at your convenience' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal context. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'friendly in nature and responsible person' (which should be 'a friendly and responsible person') and 'provide a positive experience to customer' (which should be 'to customers'). However, these errors do not impede communication and the overall lexical control is good.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control over tense and subject-verb agreement is generally strong. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'in hospitality industry' (missing the article 'the') and 'even dealing with' (which would be more natural as 'even when dealing with'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your grammar is accurate enough to ensure that your meaning is always clear, and you show a good command of formal sentence construction.
