Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sam,
Hope you are doing well.
I am writing to you regarding a recently posted job vacancy at "The Patel" restaurant, Toronto.
Hopefully you remember me! My name is Aman and we had met last month during our plane journey to Vancouver. You were sitting next to me on seat 10A and we had a very informative discussion.
While our conversation you have shared information about your chain of restaurants and one of the locations is in Toronto. I would like to apply for the position of Assistant Manager which has been recently posted on a career website.
As you know, I have completed my Masters in Business management, this would be a great opportunity for me to learn from the best. Adding to my educational background, I posses some of the important skills which every industry would need in a candidate such as accountability, honesty, punctuality, calmness and punctuality. I can go above and beyond to get work done on time.
I have attached my resume for your reference.
Hoping for a positive response and meeting you soon.
Thank you
Yours sincerely,
Aman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly reminded the recipient of the meeting context, identified the specific role of Assistant Manager, and provided relevant justifications for your suitability, such as your academic background and personal attributes. The tone is appropriate for a professional yet semi-formal letter. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between the meeting and the job application is slightly more seamless, as the transition to the job vacancy feels a bit abrupt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the meeting details from the job application and personal qualifications. Cohesive devices such as 'While our conversation' (though slightly misused) and 'Adding to my educational background' help guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with cohesion, such as the awkward phrasing 'While our conversation you have shared', which disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'informative discussion', 'job vacancy', and 'above and beyond' are used appropriately. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'posses' (spelling error: possess) and the repetitive use of 'punctuality' in the same list. Additionally, 'While our conversation' should be 'During our conversation'. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for precise communication of your professional intentions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, though there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'we had met' should be 'we met' (past simple is preferred for a specific time in the past), and 'While our conversation you have shared' is grammatically incorrect. Punctuation is generally good, though the list of attributes could be punctuated more cleanly. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do prevent the response from reaching the highest band for accuracy.
